Being part of the family

How we work

Follow our principles and you'll go far

Making a success of your career with Dunelm is simple once you understand our business principles. These are principles, not rules, so there’s plenty of freedom to express them in your own way.

OUR BUSINESS IS YOUR BUSINESS

It takes special qualities to build a thriving career here.

We put customers first in everything. And that means looking after the people who work for us. Because happy colleagues mean happy customers.

That said, our industry is highly competitive. Success in modern retail means getting it right at each and every point of contact with our customers, from online to in store. We have to stay on our toes and constantly find new ways to delight our customers. So we look for people who are keen to listen to customers and find new ways to make life easier for them. But it’s not just about improving the business. It’s also about improving yourself. There are plenty of career development opportunities plus the training and support to take advantage of them. That’s why ambition and motivation are important too.

This is a family business, but we also want you to see it as your business. That means making our business principles your own. You need to be ready to collaborate while taking individual ownership of everything you do. It can be challenging. But together we can make positive things happen.

Our business principles

Sell More

Retail is all about selling and successful retail is about selling well.

Be Committed

We ask you to be committed but we trust you to do a cracking job – your own way.

Do things our own way

Unless we ask why we’re doing things a particular way, we never find better ways of doing them.

Keep it simple

When we can keep it simple, we will. That way we can spend our time focusing on what’s really important.

What our colleagues say

There's no better way to learn about a business than to hear from the people who work there. In this series of short videos, Dunelm colleagues from all parts of the business share their stories.

Our Responsibilities

At Dunelm we always try to do the right thing.

To minimise our impact on the environment, we continually improve our recycling and waste management and reduce our energy consumption and carbon (CO2) emissions.

We also strive to give something back. Each year colleagues across the business focus on one charity, raising funds, selling charity merchandise and encouraging customers to donate. In 2017/18, Home-Start UK was our 'Charity of the Year'. We choose a different good cause every two years.

Our People

We're commited to providing fair employment to all colleagues, regardless of disability, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital status or age. And we turn that commitment into action through a number of important programmes.

Empowering female leaders programme

In 2018 we're launching a new programme to enable high-potential women to progress to roles with broader scope or more seniority. We also offer female future leaders the opportunity to attend networking events provided by Women in Retail.

Access to mentors and coaches

We develop mentoring skills as a part of our well-established ‘Lead with Impact’ programme. Our active mentoring programme continues to expand to include more managers from different parts of the business.

Evolving our attitudes to flexible working

All colleagues have the right to request flexible working and we currently offer variations of part-time and seasonal contracts. 65% of our colleagues are employed on contracts of between 8 and 29 hours per week.

Supporting parents with maternity leave

Through analysing data and listening to our colleagues we have identified that we can do more to support colleagues before, during and after returning from maternity leave. We are currently working to develop our policies and practices so that they can become the best they can be.

Increasing access to employment

We partner with Remploy, Shaw Trust, Down's Syndrome Association and Disability Confident to provide more employment opportunities for people with disabilities. We are always seeking new opportunities as part of our ongoing commitment to widening access and are currently working towards our Level 2 Disability Confident Leader status.
